Shane Pinto was controversially suspended by the NHL a year ago, and now the young star has revealed what lead to the 41-game suspension.

Last season was a whirlwind for the Ottawa Senators, and perhaps the biggest controversy of all was the suspension given to young center Shane Pinto, causing him to miss the first half of the year. The suspension was talked about all over hockey media as the increase in sportsbooks being promoted by the NHL makes the decision by the league a little hypocritical.

One person that wasn't arguing with the suspension however was Pinto himself, as he has now revealed what happened and why he didn't fight the penalty from the NHL.

"I had my buddies - because I was in Canada - just place bets for me in America," he explained during a recent appearance on the "Empty Netters" podcast. "I wasn't a Canadian citizen so I couldn't really use a Canadian sportsbook. ... That's proxy betting, so that's obviously a big no-no. It was an illegal act so, obviously, it was a pretty big deal.

"So that's why we didn't want to fight (the suspension) and we just kinda accepted it."

There were many reports over exactly what happened, and while this had been reported, it was the first time that Pinto has admitted to the situation leading to his suspension. Unfortunately, it appears as though he was just unaware of the legality of the whole situation, but after the suspension, he has clearly learned his lesson, and likely won't be involved in betting again.

In 41 games after his return, Pinto tallied 9 goals and 27 points, showing why the 23-year old has such a bright future in the NHL, and after putting the betting scandal behind him, there's high hopes in Ottawa.
