LA Kings rumoured to be making historic decision with Pierre-Luc Dubois
The LA Kings paid a kings ransom to acquire Pierre-Luc Dubois from the Winnipeg Jets, and subsequently signed him to an eight-year, $68 million contract.
Only one year into the deal, and mere days before Pierre-Luc Dubois turns 26, it appears the LA Kings may buy him out, triggering the longest buyout in NHL history; 14 years.
The NHL's buyout rules are quite controversial due to their age restrictions. If a player is bought out ahead of their 26th birthday, their contract buyout will be worth 1/3 of the remaining contract, whereas if a buyout comes after their 26th birthday, it will constitute a 2/3 buyout.
Pierre-Luc Dubois turns 26 at the end of this month, and as long as the Stanley Cup Finals does not go to a game 7, the LA Kings will have the option to buy him out while he is still 25. Per NHL insider Frank Seravalli, this could be their plan.
