With pressures building high between both Eastern Conference Finalists, Florida Panthers head coach Paul Maurice shocked fans after making fun of Jacob Trouba of the New York Rangers for the fine he received for his dirty elbow on Evan Rodrigues.

It is no surprise that the Eastern Conference Finals between the Florida Panthers and New York Rangers, both dominating teams in the regular season, are filled with brutal and dirty plays. However, some fans were caught off guard when Rangers defenseman Jacob Trouba landed a dirty elbow hit on Florida forward Evan Rodrigues late in the second period.
"Slo-mo of Jacob Trouba's elbow on Evan Rodrigues 😬"

During this game three, Trouba received a two-minute minor. However, the defenseman later received the maximum-allowed $5,000 penalty.
"Jacob Trouba's elbow on Evan Rodrigues 2 minute minor. #NYR #TimeToHunt"
"NY Rangers' Jacob Trouba has been fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under the CBA, for elbowing Florida's Evan Rodrigues."
Not to be left out of the conversation and consequences, Florida Panthers head coach Paul Maurice made his opinion of the fine known in a press conference earlier today. When asked about Trouba's fine, Maurice made fun of the player and the league, ultimately implying that this is too small to imapact the player's life and gameplay.
"Take the hat, pass it around. Poor lad, poor Jake. Won't be able to eat."
Though these remarks seem light-hearted, they also raise questions about the fining system utilized by the Department of Player Safety. When players make so much money that the maximum fine would not hurt them, the department cannot be certain that players will change their behavior from the consequences.
Though this blunt commentary may prove necessary for the future of player safety, it is unlikely to change how the NHL handles these matters. With the New York Rangers leading 2-1 against the Florida Panthers, coach Maurice will have to switch gears back to the game by game four tomorrow evening.
