Auston Matthews is the heart and soul of the Toronto Maple Leafs, but unfortunately an illness and injury have left him out of the lineup against the Boston Bruins.

After missing game 5, there was some optimism he would be able to return for the Toronto Maple Leafs' crucial game 6, trying to avoid elimination in the first round. Unfortunately, due to his status at practice, where he skated ahead of his teammates and quickly left the ice, it appears he will be watching tonight's game from the press box at Scotiabank Arena.

Auston Matthews skated at Scotiabank Arena earlier this morning and isn't on the ice now with #leafs teammates for the formal morning skate.

That's not an encouraging sign about his availability for Game 6.

Game 6, tonight at 8pm ET... This will surely calm the nerves of Leafs fans.

While the Toronto Maple Leafs, powered by the overtime heroics of Matthew Knies, were able to fend off the Boston Bruins and win game 5 without Auston Matthews, missing him for another game is absolutely crushing.

If the team can find a way to make it to game 7, and beat the odds to save their season, hopefully Auston Matthews will be able to return.

We will update this story as more details come out.
