Matvei Michkov, taken seventh overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in last year's NHL draft, may be joining the team much earlier than anyone thought

After just barely missing the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Philadelphia Flyers could use some good news right now. And, they're getting it when it comes to 2023 first-round draft pick Matvei Michkov.

Michkov, 19, is under contract with SKA St. Petersburg of the KHL until the end of the 2025-26 season. However, KHL contracts have been broken in the past two allow potential stars to come to the NHL, and the President of SKA said in an interview that may be the case when it comes to Michkov.

Alexander Medvedev told told Match.tv that he thinks it would be better for Michkov to leave, and a decision could come at the end of June.

"I think it's better to leave like [Alexander] Ovechkin or [Atemi] Panarin. When you've already established yourself in Russia - and you're not going to North America to travel between the NHL and the AHL."

Medvedev stressed that would be one of the conditions. If Michkov wasn't going to play in the NHL, he would be sent back to Russia rather than being sent to the minors.

Medvedev added the different environment might be best for Michkov after the death of his father, who was reported missing in April of 2023, and found drowned in a pond two days later.

"We mustn't forget that Matvei suffered a terrible tragedy, losing his father, who was also his mentor, being there for him all the time. It's hard to play psychologically, whether it's Sochi or Moscow, where everything reminds you of this loss. Maybe a change of scenery will make it easier to adapt.

While Michkov is under contract to SKA, he wa loaned to Sochi where he played most of the 2023-24 season. SKA is one of the top teams in the KHL, and didn't have room for an 18-year-old in the lineup. Getting to add him this summer instead of waiting another two years would be huge for the Flyers, as well as Michkov's development.
