There was plenty of chatter across social media Tuesday night after Brandon Tanev of the Pittsburgh Penguins levelled Boston Jarred Tinordi with a hit that knocked him out. Most of the talk was unanimous; not only should Tanev not have been kicked out of the game, but he shouldn't have received a penalty at all. Take a look at the hit. Yes, the result was unfortunate but more of a fluke accident than anything else. It's worth noting that the officials reviewed the play and still decided on a five minute major and a game misconduct.

It sure seems like a clean, open-ice hit. Tanev was livid, calling it a "f---ing joke" and former NHLer Ryan Whitney agrees.

"I just saw the worst call in the history of ice hockey in the Penguins Bruins game," said Whitney, referring to Tanev's ejection.

"If you are a fan of the wonderful game of hockey and the NHL you should be disgusted Tanev was kicked out of the game for this hit," he added.

Not everyone was in agreement with Whitney, saying it was a boarding call. I'm not convinced. A game misconduct means the play is automatically reviewed by the NHL's Department of Player Safety. So far, there been no word on any possible additional punishment for Tanev.

Whitney did add after his Tweet that he hoped Tinordi was ok, calling it "a brutal thing to see happen but it's part of the game."
