We are learning more about the injuries suffered by 19-year-old Timur Faizutdinov during a game in Russia. Two days ago, Faizutdinov was struck in the head during a game in the MHL, a major junior hockey league in Russia. He was immediately rushed to hospital and was said to be fighting for his life. Here's how the injury happened:

According to reports out of Russia, Faizutdinov's brother said the puck struck him in the carotid artery, a major blood vessel that transports blood to the brain. He also said Faizutdinov's heart was stopped for close to eight minutes before paramedics could get it going again. Faizutdinov is on full life support, meaning machines are ensuring his heart and lungs continue to do what they are supposed to be doing. His family is attempting to move him from hospital in Yaroslavl to a clinic in Moscow.

"We understand that this is a risk, but we have to take it. Doctors told me they were working with this type of injury for the first time. Special equipment and neurosurgery are needed to treat his injury," Faizutdinov's mother Elena told 76.ru.

His mother added that Faizutdinov's family has absolutely no complaints about the treatment he's been receiving, or any doubts regarding the competence of the medical staff that are currently attending to him. They simply feel he would have access to more experienced doctors and better equipment in Moscow.

Faizutdinov's team, Dynamo St. Petersburg, has stated it will not comment on his condition any further due to privacy issues. The team issued a statement Saturday calling for support for their captain and his family in this trying time.

It's important to note that there was no malice intended toward Faizutdinov by the person who shot the puck. It was an unfortunate accident and nothing more. We are all pulling for his swift and complete recovery.
