Rangers' Johnson, Ducks' Backes placed on waivers

New York Rangers defenceman Jack Johnson, and Anaheim Ducks forward David Backes have been placed on waivers on Sunday according to Chris Johnston of Sportsnet.

Johnson, 34, has played in 13 games this season for the New York Rangers tallying 1 point (1 G), 8 penalty minutes, and is a -5. Johnson signed a one-year contract worth $1.15 million with the Rangers in the off-season after having his previous contract bought out by the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Indianapolis, Indiana native was drafted in the first round, third overall by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. Johnson has spent parts of 15 seasons in the NHL playing for Los Angeles, Columbus, Pittsburgh, and New York. In 950 regular season game, he's recorded 303 points (71 G, 232 A), 529 penalty minutes, and is a -119. In 30 career playoff games, Johnson has 21 points (5 G, 16 A), 16 penalty minutes, and is a -18.

Backes, 36, has played in 10 games this season with the Anaheim Ducks, and was named an alternate captain at the beginning of the season. In those 10 games, he has 2 points (2 G), 2 penalty minutes, and is a -3. He's currently in the final year of a 5-year, $30 million contract which he signed with the Boston Bruins back in 2016.

He was drafted in the second round, 62nd overall by the St. Louis Blues in 2003 NHL Entry Draft. Backes has spent parts of 15 seasons in the NHL playing for St. Louis (5 seasons as captain), Boston, and Anaheim. In 960 regular season games, he's tallied 559 points (247 G, 312 A), 1,146 penalty minutes, and is a +65.
