The NHL in the United States is getting a brand new look with a brand new broadcaster. Chris Johnston of Sportsnet is reporting that a new seven-year deal has been reached and ESPN will become one of the new media partners of the NHL in America.

Right now, there is no word on the financial terms of the deal, nor would ESPN or the NHL comments on it. Johnston states the agreement will give ESPN the rights to broadcast four Stanley Cup Finals between 2022 and 2028, plus streaming rights for Disney, which certainly adds an interesting element.

According to Johnston, this represents one-half of the NHL's broadcasting rights in the Unites States. It isn't clear right now if ESPN will split its package with another broadcaster. NBC forks out $200 million annually for its exclusive broadcasting rights, which expire at the end of this year.

ESPN has been heavily criticized by American hockey fans for essentially ignoring the sport over the years. We expect more details on this new deal to be released in the coming days.
