The Toronto Maple Leafs organization announced that they've placed their star forward Mitch Marner on the Long Term Injury Reserve.

Marner has been dealing with a high-ankle sprain for a few weeks now, and the organization finally decided to place him on the LTIR.

Marner gets on the LTIR, but is eligible to play tomorrow

The Leafs have placed Marner on the LTIR retroactive to March 7th, the day he got injured.

It was also shared by the organization that they did that move for roster management purposes, and recalled the defenseman Marshall Rifai from the Marlies.

"The Maple Leafs have placed F Mitch Marner on LTI retroactive to March 7 for roster management purposes, and recalled D Marshall Rifai from the
@TorontoMarlies."

The insider Elliotte Friedman added:

"Cap move. Marner eligible to come off tomorrow and play this week"

Indeed, to join the LTIR, a player must miss at least 10 games and 24 days. This means that he could play this week.

There's a tough week ahead for the Leafs, with games scheduled against three of their division rivals: the Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning and Montreal Canadiens.

If Marner can join the team this week, he could provide valuable support to his teammates in these tough matchups.

More to come.
