The Philadelphia Flyers have been one of the stories of the NHL in 2023-24, but unsurprisingly, there's still plenty of drama to be seen around old-school Head Coach John Tortorella.

John Tortorella makes interesting move to scratch his captain

Despite being named captain just over a month ago, 31-year old veteran Sean Couturier has confirmed he will be a healthy scratch for a blockbuster showdown against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday night.

It's unclear whether this is a result of disciplinary action or a simple scratch due to his play as of late, but Tortorella continues to be the old-school coach we know he can be.

Now, Daniel Briere, the General Manager of the Philadelphia Flyers has chimed in on the situation, reiterating the understanding that this is the type of coach Tortorella can be, and accepting the situation.

Danny Briere on the #flyers decision to healthy scratch captain Sean Couturier tonight: "I can tell you one thing -- with John Tortorella, it doesn't matter who it is. That's what he's known for. He treats everybody the same way."

With the team still in the heart of the Eastern Conference playoff race, as just one point separates them and the Washington Capitals in the Metro/Wild Card hunt, it makes the decision an even more interesting one.

Briere's comments, along with their spot make it seem as though this is a short-term move for Couturier to take a game off and get back to his best when he returns, but with every point being so critical in the playoff race, one has to wonder whether or not this will come back to hurt them.
