Former first-overall pick Nico Hischier is set to make his season debut Saturday afternoon as the New Jersey Devils take on the Buffalo Sabres. Hischier suffered a leg injury during training camp and was then placed in the Devils COVID-protocol list as the team temporarily suspended play due to an outbreak of the Corona virus. Hischier has now been removed from the list and it appears the Devils are welcoming him back with a huge honour.

According to Kevin Weekes of the NHL Network, New Jersey is making the 22-year-old the new team's captain. The team has been without one since Andy Greene was traded to the New York Islanders in February of 2020. Hischier will join Roman Josi as the only two Swiss-born captains currently in the NHL.

Update: The Devils have now made it official, showing a video of Hischier putting on a sweater with the C.

Hischier has played 209 games in the NHL since debuting in 2017. He has recorded 51 goals and 84 assists for 135 points.
