It has to be one of the oddest stories out of any hockey league in the last while. Near the end of January, Canadian Jordan Murray had his contract with Dinamo Riga of the KHL terminated after CCTV footage showed him sneaking into the locker room of Omsk Avangard and stealing the stick of Ilya Kovalchuk. Kovalchuk has been silent on the issue for some time, but finally talked about the incident in a recent interview.

"Hockey players have their own traditions: in the morning, after rolling out, we prepare the sticks so that everything is ready in the evening before the game," said Kovalchuk. "That day, I also prepared the stick in the morning, and then I came back and it was not there. They say to me: "Maybe you are confusing something?" But I didn't confuse anything.

Kovalchuk explained that he was prepared to use another stick, when his old one appeared seemingly out of nowhere.

"I wanted to take another, but suddenly mine was found," he said. "I didn't even know what happened to it until I read it in the media. If what they write about the stolen stick is true, then this is not at all serious. If someone needs a stick, you can always contact me. When I have it, I do not refuse anyone."

Why Murray took the stick remains a bit of a mystery. It's ntr clear if he was looking for a souvenir or simply playing a prank on Kovalchuk, who is a point-per-game player in the KHL this season. Murray has since signed with HV71 of the SHL in Sweden. He has never commented on the incident publicly.
