Over the past few weeks, a deal sending Calgary Flames goaltender Jacob Markstrom to the New Jersey Devils has seemed inevitable, so what's taking so long?

Calgary Flames ownership vetoes blockbuster deal

The Calgary Flames ownership group have famously been one of the worst in the entire NHL for a long time now, and with the team looking to rebuild, they've put another barrier in their way.

According to NHL Insider Frank Seravalli, the Devils and Flames had a deal in place to send Markstrom to New Jersey before Don Maloney, President of Hockey Operations stepped in on behalf of ownership.

Seravalli saying he believes Flames and Devils had agreed to a trade in principle for Markstrom and then Don Maloney on behalf of ownership nixed the trade.

Will a deal get done in the next four days?

The reported holdup was salary retention for the Flames, and now, with the Devils seemingly willing to retain salary to make a deal happen, things could certainly change.

On the other hand, this has been an organization unwilling to go through a rebuild, so now, it may end in a standoff between GM Craig Conroy and ownership, with everyone clearly not on the same page in Calgary. Ultimately, moving Markstrom is the best move for the future of the organization, so the next four days will be very telling for the future of the Flames.
