The Brampton Beast of the ECHL are no more. The team has announced it is shutting down operations, citing economic troubles caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Three seasons of Covid was just too much for our modest hockey team to sustain," said Cary Kaplan, President and General Manager.

The team suspended its 2020 season in the midst of a run at making it to the playoffs. Following that, the team decided to shut down entirely for 2020-21 and stated Thursday it appeared the 2021-22 season would follow due to uncertainty over scheduling.

"From the bottom of our hearts, we want to offer an enormous thank you to the City of Brampton, Mayor Patrick Brown and Brampton City Council for supporting us with open arms, to the hundreds of thousands of Fans and sponsors who we truly worked for and tried our best to exceed your expectations, to all the amazing players, staff and coaches who gave their blood, sweat and tears for the Beast, to our three owners who invested in our Vision, we are very proud of the lasting memories that we provided," said Kaplan.

Many teams across several sports are struggling due to the pandemic. Leagues like the ECHL must have gate revenue in order to sustain operations and no one is operating at 100 percent capacity at the moment while many are still at zero. We can only hope more teams aren't forced to follow suit.
