The hockey world is full of heroes and villains, both in and out of the game. One of these famous characters from outside the NHL was a beloved actor from one of the most iconic movies to ever honor the sport.

Hockey World Mourns Loss Of Beloved Slapshot Actor

Slapshot is undoubtedly one of the highest-regarded hockey movies to grace the silver screen. This 1977 film exposed audiences to the brutal, competitive nature of hockey while also being light-hearted and developing some of the most memorable character arcs in sports movie history. Unfortunately, it was recently announced that the world lost Paul D'Amato, the actor who played the main villain Tim "Dr. Hook" McCracken.

"Paul D'Amato who played Tim "Dr. Hook" McCracken in the iconic movie #SlapShot sadly passed away at the age of 75

Rest in Peace Dr. Hook 🙏🏻"

Dr. Hook was not just powerful on the ice, but also a dirty player and social pariah. D'Amato's portrayal of Dr. Hook is an outstanding expression of the ruthlessness you could see on the ice and how divisive these players can be for avid hockey fans.

Paul D'Amato Celebrated By Fans After Passing

Paul D'Amato had been quietly suffering for the past four years with progressive supranuclear palsy. Now that he is at rest, fans are taking this time to honor this actor's legacy.

Having originally been from Worcester, Massachusetts, the Railers made a post in honor of him.

"In memory of beloved local legend, Paul «Dr. Hook» D'Amato, our deepest condolences go out to his friends and family. May he rest in peace."

Aside from the impact he had on the hockey world, more people have realized that his portrayal of Dr. Hook in Slapshot led to the original creation of Wolverine.

"RIP actor Paul D'Amato, who—among other things—was John Byrne's inspiration for the physical look of Wolverine during his iconic run as the artist on Uncanny X-Men."

Whether from hockey or Marvel, fans of D'Amato will always remember him. Everyone here offers our deepest condolences to his family and friends.
