As per Toronto Maple Leafs radio host Nick Alberga, the NHL is targeting a start date of Wednesday, October 13 for the 2021-22 season.

Of course, given the uncertainties of the pandemic, this could be subject to change depending on what the upcoming months look like. If that date were to happen however, it would put the NHL back on their proper schedule, something that hasn't happened since the season was suspended in mid-March of 2020, and later on cancelled entirely. The season being suspended for so long caused the 2020 playoffs to be delayed until August and not finished until the end of September.

That in turn resulted in the 2020-21 season to not only begin in January, but also be cut down from its regular 82-game schedule to just 56 in order to have the playoffs begin in May. These truly are unprecedented times for the NHL, as it is for everything and everybody else in the world. Thankfully however, they have managed to navigate through the difficult situations for the most part. The hope now is that everything can soon begin to return to normalcy, which would include the 2021-22 season starting at their hopeful date of October 13.
