While the Edmonton Oilers got the win last night over the Chicago Blackhawks to extend their steak to eight games, team captain Connor McDavid was still annoyed, and made sure everyone was aware of it. Following the game, McDavid spoke to reporters and called out officials for their review, and eventual cancellation, of a goal scored by Zach Hyman.
McDavid Responds after Long review of Oilers Goal
The goal in question was called back after a long review determined that Leon Draisaitl was offside on the play.
McDavid wasn't happy with the decision, as well as the amount of time it took to make it.
"If it takes you 15 minutes to determine if it's offside or not, it probably doesn't really matter. I talked to the linesman after. Ultimately, it's not their call, I guess. Obviously, they said it came down from the league. But, you zoom in, you keep zooming in until you can't zoom in any more, i guess it's offside. These are calls that change games, and ultimately it didn't go our way."
McDavid added he believes the call made was the wrong one.
"I believe it was onside. It's kind of possession, too right? The argument of possession, that whole debate can start again.
McDavid Not Happy with Offside Call and the Time it Took to Make It
The debate over offside reviews has really heated up over the past couple of seasons, and a lot of it has to do with the time it takes. If, as McDavid pointed out, we're talking about a fraction of an inch, does it really matter? For fans, that likely depends on which side of the call your favourite team falls on. But, the delay certainly takes someone away from the game, and needs a better process to stop that from happening.
