Ever since it came out that the 5th overall pick in the 2022 draft was traded by the Philadelphia Flyers because he refused to play there, the big question has been why? Some have speculated that he didn't want to play for a rookie GM (Danny Briere), that he didn't want to play under coach John Tortorella, and even that he was unhappy about not being signed last year and getting bonuses included. We're now, finally, getting some insight from his agent on the decision.

Agent of Gauthier Addresses Rumours Regarding his Client's Refusal to Play for the Flyers

While Gauthier himself has not spoken to the media since the trade to the Anaheim Ducks, TSN's Pierre LeBrun reached out to Gauthier's agent. Here's what he had to say about his client's decision.
"It's a private issue between the player and his family. We definitely had conversations with Philadelphia, we had very respectable conversations with Philadelphia about it, we've chosen just to take the high road and leave all that information private."

LeBrun also said on Insider Trading that he expects Gauthier and his agent to "clear the air" even more over the coming days.

Agent on Why Gauthier Refused to Play for Philadelphia

While Gauthier's agent may believe his camp took the high road, it appears Flyers' brass see it differently. Both Briere and team President Keith Jones have reiterated several times that Gauthier initially told the team he was excited about coming to Philadelphia, and then conversations were abruptly halted. According to them, Gauthier and his agent refused to even have a chat with anyone from Philadelphia's head office, even as recently as the World Juniors in December. They say they were left with no choice but to make the trade, in which the Flyers received defenceman Jamie Drysdale and a second round pick.
