Wayne Gretzky had a crazy contract offer on the table but decided to turn it down to stay with the Oilers.

Gretzky Turns Down Offer That Included Ownership Of The Canucks

During the 1980s, Wayne Gretzky was at the peak of his career. He was winning Stanley Cups with the Oilers and scoring at a historic rate. After clinching a cup with the Oilers, Gretzky got a call from the Vancouver Canucks and they had a historic offer on the table for him.
After Wayne Gretzky won the Stanley Cup, he was offered 25% of the @Canucks and a huge raise.

He declined. The rest is history.

Gretzky would have gotten a $2.2 million raise on top of ownership with the Canucks. Adjusted for inflation, Gretzky's raise would have put him over $8 million today and that is just salary alone.
The ownership is where the money gets absurd. Today the Canucks are valued at $1.32 billion and 25% of that, which would have been Gretzky's cut, would be worth $330 million today.
Gretzky obviously turned the deal down but he still did well for himself with his net worth coming in at around $250 million today which is nothing to scoff at.
