Adam Johnson's Tragic Passing

The entire hockey world was shocked October 28th 2023, when Nottingham Panthers forward Adam Johnson, 29 died following an on ice collision that resulted in a fatal cut to Johnson's throat.
Hockey fans worldwide have mourned the loss of Johnson and many concerns have been raised regarding the need for a potential mandate for neck protection at the professional level.
It has also caused a significant backlash aimed at Sheffield Steelers forward Matt Petgrave, 31. Many outraged fans claim that Petgrave injured Johnson on purpose, which has sparked significant debate in online hockey communities.
Shortly after the incident, Petgrave was arrested for his involvement in the death.

Clint Malarchuk Shares his Thoughts

Clint Malarchuk, former Buffalo Sabres goaltender who is famously a survivor of a very similar incident. During a regular season game against the Blues in March of 1989, a collision in front of the Sabres net resulted in a sliced carotid artery for Malarchuk. Who survived thanks to the quick work of the team's athletic trainer. After the incident, Malarchuk took to former NHLer Cam Janssen's podcast, The Cam & Strick Podcast to share his thoughts.
«There's no way, I watched it real close to see the incident. I wanted to know how it happened. I wasn't watching to see if the guy did it on purpose, not a chance, no way. And when I saw the clip, it really kind of pisses me off that people are actually saying he's (Petgrave) kind of a dirty player. Well, so what? I like dirty players, right? But I don't know a player who would do something like that.
He got clipped and spun around, it's a fast game you know? Doesn't take much for a guy to flip around like that.» – Clint Malarchuk on the Adam Johnson Tragedy"

The Human Side of the Game

After sharing his personal struggles with mental health following his incident, Malarchuk does an excellent job highlighting the impact on the mental health of the players involved. This sort of tragedy has an enormous effect on all parties, especially the player who is being blamed for the incident.
It isn't fair that Petgrave is made to blame for this accident, because as Malarchuk says, it's a fast game and no player would ever do something like this on purpose. History of dirty plays or not, it's ridiculous to claim that something like this was deliberate.
It is also very disheartening to find that many of the comments made online attacking Petgrave are racially motivated. In a world that is already so divided, there is no room for this behaviour in the game.
As it currently stands the investigation into Johnson's death is ongoing, and the hockey world remains grieving for Johnson's family and friends.
