Nicklas Backstrom is having one of the worst seasons of his career, with one point in eight games.

He is no longer the player he was when the Capitals won the cup in 2018, and certainly isn't living up to his five-year $46-million contract.

Stepping Away Indefinitely

«Given my ongoing injury situation, I decided to take some time and step away from the game. This is a difficult decision, but one that I feel is right for my health at this time. I want to thank my teammates, the organization, and fans for their unwavering support throughout this process. I ask for privacy at this time as I determine my next steps and viable options moving forward.»

With an injury weighing on him, he has stepped away from the game of hockey indefinitely.

Retirement Likely?

While Backstrom may return one day, it is not crazy to think this is the end for him. The 35-year-old has made over $95-million in his career, and has won Lord Stanley. Is this the end for him>
