The Carolina Hurricanes, despite pre-season expectations of being Stanley Cup contenders are off to a slow 3-4-0 start, and now, it appears they have taken a massive blow.

A devastating injury

According to Head Coach Rod Brind'Amour, veteran defenseman Brett Pesce will be out for a long time after being evaluated for a lower body injury.

Rod Brind'Amour on Brett Pesce, who was re-evaluated for his lower-body injury.

"Bad news. I was hoping he'd be a day or two away, but that's definitely not the case."

Week-to-week?

"Way more than that. It's not good."

This is a big blow for a Hurricanes team that have given up 16 goals in their three game losing streak, and now, they'll need to turn it around without one of their most productive defensemen.

In five games this season, Pesce was off to a solid start with 2 points, and after a career high 30 a season ago, this is a tough pill to swallow for the 28-year old who appeared ready to take the next step this season.
