As the NHL's 2023-24 season is set to begin, there's a cloud of uncertainty hovering over the upcoming season for two talented restricted free agents, Shane Pinto and Tim Berni. Both players still remain unsigned by their respective teams, the Ottawa Senators and the Columbus Blue Jackets. This situation has raised questions about their availability for the opening night roster and the potential impact on their teams.

Contrasting Paths: Pinto vs. Berni

While both Pinto and Berni remain unsigned RFAs, they are in completely different situations. Shane Pinto awaits a contract agreement, leaving fans and management hopeful that a deal can be reached before the season opener. On the other hand, Tim Berni, a defenseman for the Columbus Blue Jackets, embarked on a unique path, participating in training camp on a professional tryout contract.
However, Berni's situation took an unexpected turn when he was released from his professional tryout contract. This decision has left him contemplating a return to Switzerland for the 2023-24 season, adding further uncertainty to his NHL future. Despite the setback, the Blue Jackets issued Berni a qualifying offer in late June, ensuring that his rights would be retained until 2027 if he chooses to pursue opportunities overseas.

Berni is an intriguing defensive prospect with potential

Berni, a 23-year-old defenseman, showcased his potential last season with the Columbus Blue Jackets, making his NHL debut and appearing in 59 games. During his rookie campaign, he contributed three points, including one goal and two assists, while also accumulating 34 penalty minutes and posting a minus-26 rating.
As the season starting is upon us, it will be interesting to see whether Berni sticks around in North America. In the case of Shane Pinto, all eyes will be on how quickly Ottawa can shed much needed cap space and get Pinto signed to a fair deal for his past performances.
