The NHL has expanded twice in the past seven years into both Las Vegas and Seattle, and now, given the success of both these teams, it appears the NHL has their eyes on more expansion.

Third time's the charm?

According to deputy commissioner Bill Daly, the NHL are open to a return to Atlanta, and while nothing is imminent, this could be a huge option if the league does open itself up to expansion again.

I think times have changed pretty dramatically and the market demographics have changed pretty dramatically since the first time we went there and then again in 1999. I think a lot of bigger businesses are in Atlanta (now).

That comes from a recent interview with ESPN's Greg Wyshynski, and given all the talk about expansion as of late, it's safe to say that this is a significant comment from someone in power.

Atlanta again

The NHL first made their presence known in Atlanta with the Flames way back in the 70's before ultimately moving to Calgary, and then with the Thrashers which ultimately moved to Winnipeg, but now, it appears things could be different.

In terms of a sports city, there's few better set up for expansion in the NHL than Atlanta, but after two failures, this will always be met with criticism, so we will wait and see what happens going forward as the NHL looks to expand yet again.
