1000-point scorer Alexei Kovalev has revealed the biggest regret of his NHL career.

Kovalev's Career

Alexei Kovalev has quite a lengthy NHL career. Over the course of 19 seasons, Kovalev played over 1300 games and scored over 1000 points. Kovalev played in 9 seasons with the Rangers, 6 with the Penguins, 5 with the Canadiens, 2 with Ottawa, and one season with the Panthers. Now those numbers don't add up to 19 and that is because Kovalev was traded midseason 4 times throughout his career.

His best year came with the Penguins where he posted career highs in goals and points with 44 and 95 respectively. However, it should be noted that he posted these numbers on a Penguins team with Jaromir Jagr and Mario Lemieux.

Kovalev's Biggest Regret

Recently, Kovalev spoke on the biggest regret of his NHL career.

"I made a mistake and became a little too greedy. On the other hand, I wanted to be shown respect, which I didn't get. I wasn't asking for much more, just a small raise."

Kovalev was referencing his decision to sign with the Senators as opposed to the Montreal Canadiens, who offered him $500k less.

"If I had to do it all over again, I would have accepted the Canadiens' offer rather than the Senators in the summer of 2009. There would have been a bit of bitterness, because I wanted to be recognized for what I'd accomplished for the team, but I think it would have been much better for my career. I'd probably say: OK, I'll take it even if they disrespect me a bit, but it's more important for me and my family."

"I felt good in Montreal with the organization, with the fans. I think it's thanks to them that I was so successful."

After joining Ottawa, Kovalev's career hit a steep downhill and he would only have three seasons left in the NHL.

Kovalev's quote offers some insight into how brutal an NHL career can be on the player's families and every time they are traded or they sign elsewhere, they uproot and force their families to leave their old lives behind.
