The NHL offseason is a time of change for both teams and players. New players come into the league and others exit. One such veteran may be on his way out of the NHL in the near future.
Edler Still A Free Agent
Alexander Edler is still a free agent as of now heading into the 2023-24 season. Most teams have handed out their contracts and Player Tryouts (PTOs). This leaves Edler without an NHL opportunity for the first time since 2005. According to Jeff Peterson Edler is still hoping to play and has not retired as of now.
Alexander Edler started his career with the Vancouver Canucks in 2006-07. Over the next decade and a half Edler would be a mainstay on the Canucks blueline. At his best, Edler was a two-way defenseman who could impact in all areas of the ice. His career high in points with the Canucks was 42 in 2009-10.
Edler then headed to the Los Angeles Kings where he played another 2 seasons and was a stable force on the blueline. Now the 37-year-old defenseman is without a contract. It will be interesting to see if any team is willing to give him an opportunity to fight for a roster spot before the NHL season begins.
