The Colorado Avalanche have developed some big time stars throughout the tenure of their franchise, and now, once again, it appears that it may end up costing them.

A rising star

When Devon Toews came to the Avalanche, it was due to him ultimately becoming too expensive for the New York Islanders, and the same situation is seemingly brewing right now.
That was all before he partnered Cale Makar and put up three career years while helping the team to their third Stanley Cup in franchise history, so where does the team go from here?

A move incoming?

While Colorado have done everything right, the market hasn't helped them, as players like Jake Sanderson are given eight-year, $8 million AAV deals, and with Toews experience, success, leadership and still potentially bright future, there's no way the Avalanche can fit him under the cap.
Ultimately, the team brought in a young defenseman, paired him with another bright young star and he's gotten better, so while he may depart via trade or free agency, it seems his days in Colorado are numbered, it's now just about how the team want to handle his departure.
