In years past, Connor McDavid made headlines with his staggering $12.5 million/year deal. However, as other players have since surpassed this, speculation about McDavid's next deal is rife.

Breaking Records

Recent discussions with ex-Canucks coach Bruce Boudreau on NHL Network suggest McDavid could set another record with his upcoming contract.

When prompted by Coyle about McDavid's potential earnings, Boudreau responded:

"He'll likely be around 29. Seeing him secure an eight-year deal at $15 million wouldn't surprise me. Just look at how quickly Erik Karlsson was surpassed after his big signing. Salaries are escalating across the board."

Boudreau believes McDavid could easily land an eight-year, $15 million AAV contract, which, while not groundbreaking in the larger sports landscape, is significant in the NHL context.

A Cup on the Horizon?

Highlighting Jack Eichel's achievement as the first player to win the Stanley Cup with a salary over $10 million in the 2022-23 season, Coyle suggests McDavid and Draisaitl might be next, especially with the evolving salary cap situation.

The NHL's growth means increased player earnings. Even if McDavid secures $15 million annually, rising stars in the league may soon overshadow him.
