A Modern-Day Superstar

Cale Makar has accomplished more in the NHL at age 24 than many other players do in their whole career. After a Calder Trophy win in 2020, he'd capture the Stanley Cup, the Norris Trophy AND the Conn Smythe just two seasons later.

Now, Makar can add NHL 24 cover star to his list of accolades. One he doesn't seem as keen on, though, is comparisons to arguably the greatest defenseman to ever suit up in the NHL: Bobby Orr.

Comparisons to Greatness

Both Wayne Gretzky and Vegas Golden Knights head coach have been among those parroting those comparisons, and Makar had this to say while interviewed by ESPN's Greg Wyshynski:

"Those are crazy comments. To be compared to a guy like that is crazy," Makar told ESPN last week. "It's hard for me to comprehend that. I'm 24. The amount that he accomplished in his career is pretty much insurmountable. I'm nowhere near that point yet. Obviously, a comparison is a comparison. But for me, [I'm] just kind of bringing it down to Earth a little bit."

"Anytime you're compared to somebody like that, obviously you're humbled," Makar said. "But at the same time, I just feel like I've almost done nothing yet here. I'm still so young."

Though it remains to be seen how many of Orr's career statistics he can match before he retires, Makar is well on his way toward becoming an all-time great NHL blueliner - even if he gets hit with the infamous NHL cover star curse!
