NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman posted a photo on X, the site formerly known as Twitter, of an upcoming interview with William Nylander, sharing that the Forward wishes to stay in Toronto, but that there is a lot of time to decide of a contract extension.
Friedman's post makes it clear that Nylander's intent is to re-sign with the Maple Leafs. Nylander, 27, will be an Unrestricted Free Agent at the end of the 2023-24 season, along with fellow Leafs star Auston Matthews.
Nylander signed to a six-year deal with the Leafs in 2018, ending a lengthy contract dispute at a deadline that would have had Nylander sit out the 2018-19 season had he not signed.
Nylander's $6.9M AAV for 2023-24 is sure to increase with his next contract, whether in Toronto or not.
Earlier in the offseason, Elliotte Friedman reported that negotiations between the Leafs and Nylander were at a "standstill", with both sides still adamant about their respective offers, with talks still being close, although it's not been reported if there have been any material changes on that front.
It seems that Nylander would like to sign with Toronto, but as to the topic of "sooner or later", Nylander appears to be in no rush, although Nylander seems positive with the idea of a return to Toronto, if the Leafs can afford to do so. Continously at the forefront of rumors with his contract nearing it's end, and with fellow stars Mitch Marner and John Tavares up for extensions the season after, it's clear Nylander has many potential options for the route he wants to go down, and we may not get a resolution quickly, but Nylander's goal appears to still be that of playing for the Leafs in the long-term.
