The Karlsson trade is still sending shockwaves through the NHL, as the three-way deal contained so many moving parts to analyze. When the Canadiens acquired another goalie in the trade, many raised questions about what that meant for the club.

Casey DeSmith's Future

GM Kent Hughes has a plan in mind for the goaltenders, and one that doesn't have DeSmith buried in the Minors. In his recent press briefing, he stated that the idea was likely to trade him, but the goalie market is much slower moving.

Three is a Crowd

That raised some questions as to what the status of the current Canadiens goalie, Jake Allen, would be. In a recent interview with Radio Canada, the goalie spoke his thoughts about what the situation might bring.

"There are only 23 players on a roster. It will be up to them to decide if they want to waste a spot on an extra goaltender or not. But I think in the future, there will be more and more goaltenders who play during the season, not just two. It's the very nature of the position."

"The game is so fast. Injuries are becoming more frequent because young players are playing hockey more and more often. The body accumulates mileage at a younger age. I think in the future, we will see three or four goalies being used very regularly throughout the year." - Jake Allen

This idea from Allen isn't all that novel. The trend in the NHL has been to use more goalies, and it never hurts to have some depth between the pipes as the season goes on. Allen seems to be embracing the competition as well.

"I've never been in such a situation before, but at the same time, it will be a fun competition, and I'm looking forward to being a part of it." - Jake Allen

There is still plenty of time for Hughes to figure out the situation between the pipes. Goalies are always hot commodities as the season goes on, so in the long runs, the Canadiens are in a great spot.
