Coming into the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, one of the players to watch for was Matvei Michkov. At just 18 years old, Michkov had shown some incredible promise, and what only remained was how high or low he might go.

Draft Results Overblown?

There wasn't a question of whether or not Michkov would get drafted, and ultimately he went in the first round (7th overall) to the Philidelphia Flyers. Using a first-rounder on the Russian gives a strong indication that the Flyers think Michkov is worth the hype.

Not Everyone Agrees

Not everyone is so sure that Michkov will turn out to be the top prospect that the Flyers are hoping for. Former Canadiens scout Grant McCagg said his thoughts on the prospect in a recent "The Stick" Podcast.

"I honestly think he could be the next Yakupov, He doesn't blow me away... he's not super fast, he's not big, I wouldn't call him a gritty player. He's gonna have problems dealing with the NHL, in the playoffs especially."

While McCagg did have Michkov decently high on his mock-draft lists, he seems to think that the young skilled Russian won't have the guts to play when it matters, in the playoffs.

McCagg doubled down on his comments, saying that it wasn't only because of Michkov's personality.

"The teams didn't just pass on him because they had character concerns," said McCagg. "I've talked to alot of scouts."

Ultimately, Michkov is still very young. At just 18 years old, he has loads of time to continue his development, on the ice and off.
