We now have an idea of what Evan Bouchard's next contract will look like.

Bouchard's Next Contract

Evan Bouchard is one of the biggest RFAs yet to sign a new contract. Coming off a 40-point campaign, Bouchard has proven himself as a puck-moving defenseman who could potentially be the Oilers' number one guy.

Kurt Leavins of the Edmonton Journal offered some insight into what the Oilers and Bouchard are planning on doing.

"Nothing new yet on the Evan Bouchard deal. The chatter is that the two sides are "close". While I still expect the AAV to come in at around $3.9m, I wonder if we might see a deal that escalates a little from Year 1 to Year 2?" - Leavins

Can The Oilers Make This Work?

Currently, the Oilers have $3.5 million in cap space which means that if they were to sign Bouchard to this $3.9 million deal, they would need to clear out some cap space.

They currently have 13 forwards on their NHL roster and 6 defensemen (not including Bouchard) who all make at least $762,500. This is quite encouraging because it means if the Oilers wanted to sign Bouchard, they would not even need to trade anybody, rather just send a player down to the AHL.

However, the Oilers are also looking to give players like Brandon Sutter a shot on a PTO which means that they may earn a contract and even if it is the league minimum, they will need to move on from somebody on their current roster.
