Fighting has been a hot topic around hockey for the past several years. Recently this was brought back up when a junior league banned fighting entirely. One NHL player who played in the league decided to speak up about the ban.
QMJHL Bans Fighting
The QMJHL on Thursday announced they would be banning fighting from the league entirely. The new rule banning fighting reads as follows:
Rule 47 of the Playing Rules, starting with the 2023-2024 season, provides for fights being prohibited with more restrictive and dissuasive sanctions in order to emphasize a safe quality of play conducive to the development of players participating in QMJHL activities. The QMJHL will ensure that the sanctions mentioned in the following paragraphs are applied. As soon as a fight occurs, those engaged must be systematically ejected from the game. Any player found to have instigated the fight will also receive an automatic one-game suspension. The person declared to be the aggressor during the fight will receive a minimum of two automatic games of suspension. In addition to the game misconduct, an automatic game suspension is imposed starting with the player's 2nd fight of the season. This suspension is in addition to the sanctions described in the preceding paragraphs.
This rule change has led to many people debating if this is the right path for hockey to take.
Boston Bruins forward Jakub Lauko was one of the first players to speak regarding fighting being banned in the QMJHL. Lauko who is heading into his 6th season in the Bruins organization also played for the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies of the QMJHL. Upon seeing the rule change Lauko had a pretty strong reaction.
as someone who played in 'Q' what a joke!!!
Either way, fighting is getting closer to being out of the game each day. Now the focus turns to other junior and professional leagues to see if they will follow suit.
