Auston Matthews has shown many times that he's among the NHL's elite. He's undoubtedly one of the best players in the league, and another piece of evidence for that has come to light.

Is Matthews Better than Ovi?

Alex Ovechkin may have had the most successful career of the 21st century. He has been truly remarkable, and he's getting closer to beating Wayne Gretzky's record.

However, an advanced statistic suggests that Auston Matthews might be a better goal scorer than Ovechkin.

As you can see in the numbers below, Matthews' average goals per game is higher than Ovechkin's. In fact, Matthews ranks 7th in that category, just behind Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Mike Bossy, Brett Hull, Jari Kurri, and Teemu Selanne.

Matthews' Consistency

In the seven seasons he's been in the NHL, Matthews has never scored fewer than 34 goals.

He has won two Rocket Richard Trophies, one Hart Trophy, and one Ted Lindsay Award.

At 25 years old, he's only one goal away from reaching the 300-goal mark, making him the eighth youngest player to achieve that milestone. Once again, right behind Ovi.

We can't wait to see him in the next season.
