Fighting in hockey has been a controversial debate for the past several years. Many want to see it banned for safety. Others feel it is an essential part of the game and cannot be removed.

History of Fighting In Hockey

Fighting in hockey can be traced all the way back to the first game ever played in 1875. Spectators who wanted to use the ice fought the players who were playing in the game. Then it grew until fighting was such an integral part of hockey that a certain player's entire role was to fight. These enforcers played a vital role in the time that they played. However, the cost was their long-term health. Whether it's brain injuries or other long-term issues every enforcer has their fair share of health issues. This has called into question the need for fighting in today's NHL.

Brian Burke Speaks On The Future Of Fighting

In a recent interview veteran NHL general manager Brian Burke gave his opinion on fighting and its place in the NHL.

I will personally fight anyone who tries to get rid of fighting. I'll kick their ass

Burke's comments come from his experience in the NHL. Most of his time as a general manager was in the golden era for fighting and physicality in the NHL. Many people are resistant to change and Burke is no different.

The debate will likely continue for years before fighting is left out in the cold by the NHL. Both sides feel very strongly about the issue which will likely delay a resolution. Regardless the NHL needs to find a way to make the game more compatible with good long term health or parents and players will look for other options of sports to play.
