The Montreal Canadiens have been very smart over the past year, taking on assets to get more future assets, and by joining the Erik Karlsson trade, they ended up with both Jeff Petry and Casey DeSmith, while moving out Mike Hoffman.

Another veteran on the move?

In the process, they gained future assets, and after rumours emerged that Petry is likely to be traded either soon or at the trade deadline, it appears that DeSmith may be following suit.

According to La Presse, General Manager Kent Hughes is yet to reach out to DeSmith or his agent over 24 hours after the trade went through, making him a prime trade candidate.

Plenty of trade partners

With teams like Buffalo, Edmonton and many others needing goaltending help, this gives the Canadiens another opportunity to land more draft picks for the future, and could end up being a masterstroke from Hughes.

In five years at the NHL level, DeSmith has put together a 58-44-15 record with a .912 save percentage and a 2.81 GAA, and while he's not a star in between the pipes, he's a very serviceable player, and should net Montreal some solid assets.
