There are most likely very big things on the horizon for Ottawas's third overall pick in the 2020 NHL entry draft. For now, though Tim Stutzle will need to have surgery on an injury suffered during training in his home country of Germany.

"Adler forward Tim Stutzle will not be able to participate in the seven-time PENNY-DEL champion's training for the next six to eight weeks," said the Mannheim Eagles in an official release on the team's website. "The 18-year-old, who was recently drafted third by the Ottawa Senators, injured his arm during a training session yesterday, Monday (October 12) and will be operated on by a specialist tomorrow."

Speaking to the Ottawa Sun, Mannheim GM Jan-Axel Alavaara confirmed a break but wouldn't elaborate further on the nature of the injury.

“There's something broken but I can't say more than that,” said Alavaara. “There's going to be an operation Thursday.”

Alavaara said the organization will be in contact with the Senators soon.

“I wasn't there but according to the coach Pavel Gross when I talked to him after he said it was a drill they had and two players bumped into each other,” said Alavaara. “It was Tim Stuetzle and another player and he was cutting his lane a little bit and it wasn't a hard check or anything. They bumped into each other and it was an unlucky angle.

Stutzle played for Mannheim last season as well, recording seven goals and 34 points in 41 games as a 17-year-old. The winger was one of the major names in this year's draft, with just Alexis Lafreniere and Quinton Byfield drafted ahead of him.

Later Tuesday morning, the Ottawa Senators released their own statement.

"In consultation with doctors in Germany and with our own medical staff, it has been determined that Tim requires a surgical procedure to stabilize a fracture," said Senators general manager Pierre Dorion. "The procedure is scheduled to take place in Germany later this week and has an expected recovery time of six to eight weeks. Our medical staff will remain in regular contact with Tim and his doctors as he begins his recovery through to the point that he is medically cleared."

TSN's Brent Wallace confirmed the injury in question is a broken left hand.
