While top draft picks are usually more known for their skill and flash over their ability to toss hands, this former 1st overall pick is changing that narrative. An incident that took place just a few days ago is making rounds online, and it's grabbing the attention of quite a few hockey fans.

Who is Bryan Berard?

The Ottawa Senators held the 1st overall pick in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft, and they used that pick to select Bryan Berard, a defenseman from the United States. Although he never really lived up to the hype of a 1st overall selection, Berard did have a nice little career in the NHL.

Berard played for seven different NHL clubs during his 10-year tenure in the NHL, playing in 619 games and earning 323 points during that time. Following the conclusion of his NHL career, Berard spent one year with Chekhov Vityaz in the KHL.

Berard managed to earn himself the Calder Memorial Trophy during the 1996-97 season, which signified that he was the best rookie in the NHL during that season. He also earned himself a Bill Masterton victory during the 2003-04 season, which is awarded annually to the player who best exemplifies sportsmanship in the NHL.

While it was by no means a superstar career, Berard enjoyed what most people don't.

Berard Arrested

News came out this morning that Berard, who is now 46 years old, was arrested on Sunday following an incident at a bar in Newport. The incident took place around 1 a.m. and saw Berard get physical with another man who is currently anonymous. When police arrived to de-escalate the situation, Berard began resisting their attempts to get him to calm down.

The report states video footage of the incident showed Berard had been in a conversation with the man which ended in a hug, but after Berard walks away, the other man pushes Berard in the back with one hand and Berard grabs a hold of the man's shirt and the altercation begins. The other man told the police he did not know Berard and that Berard had come up to him randomly and told him to «settle down,» before the fight began.

Berard was later charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, which are both misdemeanors in Rhode Island.

Berard spoke to The Newport Daily News and had the following to say regarding the incident.

"There's not much behind it. It was just a complete misunderstanding."

Berard expects the charges to be dropped shortly.
