Former First Round Pick Suddenly Announces His Retirement
Former 13th overall pick Sven Baertschi has decided to retire. He spent 11 total years playing hockey in North America. His career is reportedly being cut short due to injuries.
Baertschi's NHL Career At A Glance
Starting out in the WHL with the Portland Winterhawks Baertschi shined in his draft year with 85 points in 66 games. He was then selected by the Calgary Flames where he spent the next 4 seasons fighting for a roster spot in the NHL.
He was then traded to the Vancouver Canucks for a second-round pick which would eventually become Rasmus Andersson. He would call Vancouver home for the 6 seasons where he had multiple seasons of 50-plus games. He suffered a concussion early in the 2018-19 season that would drastically change his career trajectory.

Since that 2018-19 season, Baertschi has not been able to get back on the ice full-time. He played his most games since then in 2019-2020 where he played 49 games most of which came in the AHL.
