The University of Vermont has struggled to attract top-of-the-line talent in recent years. Gone are the days of Martin St-Louis, Tim Thomas, John LeClair, and Dominique Ducharme in the green and gold. Things seemed to be headed for the better with head coach Todd Woodcroft, but his firing two weeks ago put a damper on that notion.
One of his biggest finds was Flyers draft pick Alex Bump, who committed to the school when he was still relatively unknown. In the year since getting drafted, Bump's stock has grown quite a bit, and the Catamounts were looking forward to adding him, or so they thought.
Despite being on UVM's campus to start his on-ice training, and having already started his classes for the year, Alex Bump has officially entered the transfer portal.
The strangest thing about this is that Bump is a freshman, who has never played an NCAA game in his life. We almost never see freshmen trying to leave their teams, much less ones who've never played a game before.
It should be noted that Bump had a very good relationship with the now-fired Woodcroft, which was a huge part of his commitment to UVM. With Woodcroft gone, it seems like Bump didn't see any reason to stay.
It didn't take long for fans to start speculating where Bump's next home could be, and the consensus is that he's likely headed to his home state of Minnesota.
With the recent departure of Logan Cooley and a star-studded roster full of plenty of NHL draft picks, Bump would likely be playing with much better linemates than he would at UVM.
While we don't blame Bump for wanting what's best for him, we see this situation as quite confusing.
