The Maple Leafs have 22 free agents on their roster. Brad Treliving won't be able to sign them all. One player, in particular, is expected to walk away when the market opens on July 1st.

Treliving Will Lose an Important Forward

After reports of contract extension negotiations, it seems that David Kampf will change teams.

Kampf is one of the league's best bottom-six forwards. He excels defensively, especially against the top players of opposing teams. Despite his weak offensive production, he should be able to secure a lucrative contract.

According to Leafs Latest,

"The Leafs have considered re-signing F David Kampf; however, it's likely that he will leave in free agency."

Focusing on Bigger Issues

Treliving's focus will now have to be on the Leafs' top players. Losing Kampf is painful, but it's part of the game.

If Treliving can make the right moves, he won't have lost Kampf for nothing. If he uses that money to re-sign an important player, such as Ryan O'Reilly, William Nylander, or Auston Matthews, it doesn't seem like such a significant sacrifice anymore.
