It is the end of the road in the NHL for this former first-rounder. At least for now. According to reports out of Sweden, Henrik Borgstrom has signed a two-year deal with HV71 of the Swedish Hockey League.

Lots of Promise

Borgstrom was initially drafted 23rd overall by the Florida Panthers in 2016. He had left Sweden to play in the US College system before being drafted. Despite a ton of potential, Borgstrom simply couldn't find his footing in the NHL.

During the 2020-21 seasons, Borgstrom left for Sweden after being unable to come to terms with Florida as a restricted free agent. He was then shipped to Chicago alongside Brett Connolly, Riley Stillman, and a 2021 7th round draft pick in exchange for Lucas Carlsson and Lucas Wallmark. Borgstrom agreed to a two-year deal with the Blackhawks and played 52 games in the NHL the next season, but again could not find his offensive touch. In July of 2022, he was placed on unconditional waivers by Chicago for the purpose of buying out his contract.

The Capitals

After being axed by Chicago, Borgstrom signed with a one-year, two-way deal with the Washington Capitals just a few days later. He managed to get just one game with Washington in 2022-23, spending the rest of his time in the AHL. He won a Calder Cup with the Hershey Bears about a week ago.
