The situation surrounding the goaltending of the New Jersey Devils just became significantly more intricate.

Post-Season Hip Operation

The Daily Sentinel, in a conversation with the Assistant General Manager of the Devils and General Manager of AHL's Utica Comets, Dan MacKinnon, reported that Nico Daws, following the conclusion of the regular season, had a hip labrum operation. The procedure is expected to keep Daws out of action for an extended period.

"The 22-year-old prospect of the Devils, who held the position of the Comets' primary goalie for a large part of the 2022-23 season, is projected to be absent for the initial segment of the forthcoming 2023-24 season." - Daily Sentinel

The average recovery period for such a surgery is approximately six months. Notably, similar surgeries have been conducted on other NHL goalies in the past.

Persevering Through the Pain

MacKinnon disclosed that Daws' injury occurred during the season. Despite the injury, Daws was adamant about playing, even continuing into the postseason, where he competed in all 6 games for the Comets. Notably, Daws' career highlights include winning the World Junior Championship gold with Canada and the OHL Championship with the Guelph Storm.

As speculations suggest that goaltender MacKenzie Blackwood may soon leave New Jersey, perhaps without receiving an extension of a qualifying offer, the absence of Daws, who was expected to attend the preseason and training camp, poses an added challenge. With few other alternatives within the organization, the Devils' hope was pinned on Daws' potential contribution to the team.
