The San Jose Sharks have many valuable pieces despite their low finish in the standings. From Erik Karlsson to Tomas Hertl, the Sharks have many players of value.
However, their most valuable asset is not even a player, it is a pick. Specifically the 4th overall pick in this year's draft.
You may think it is crazy to say the 4th overall pick is more valuable than Erik Karlsson who just had his first 100+ point season but the truth is that 4th overall this year is likely worth 1st overall in most other years.
The top 4 in this draft are Connor Bedard (Generational talent), Adam Fantilli (goes first in almost every draft ever), Leo Carlsson (one of the best Swedes of the 21st century), and Matvei Michkov (the best Russian prospect since Ovechkin).
Having the 4th overall pick, the Sharks are guaranteed an opportunity to draft one of these players but may be decided against it for one reason or another.

This is interesting considering what the return could be. I have listed out 3 potential trades I could see taking place and why I think they could work out.
To SJS:
5th overall, 31st or 32nd overall, and 37th overall
To MTL:
4th overall and 36th overall
This would make sense because Montreal may want "their guy" and to guarantee to get "their guy" they may have to trade up. San Jose gets an additional late first and they swap positions in the 2nd round as well.
To SJS:
6th overall and 12th overall
To ARZ:
4th overall and 26th overall
The Sharks and the Coyotes brokered a deal at last year's draft where the Coyotes moved up to 11 by giving up 3 picks in the late first and early second. If Arizona were to decide a gamechanger at 4 is better to pair with Logan Cooley and Clayton Keller as opposed to whoever they want at 6, they could offer to move down 14 slots to move up 2.
To SJS:
9th overall, 17th overall, 42nd overall, and 43rd overall
To DET:
4th overall and 26th overall.
The Red Wings are in dire need of a superstar. Trading up to four guarantees they get one to have their rebuild centered around. The Red Wings have a solid team so far based on their rebuild but no bona fide superstar just yet. San Jose gets many of assets while Detroit gets a top player.
