The Rangers have been actively hunting for a new head coach since parting ways with Gerard Gallant earlier this spring. As their list of candidates narrows and they close in on a few applicants, they've begun to get a better idea of each coach's fit with the team. It appears as though they've zeroed in on one specific coach, and he could be officially hired sooner than we thought.

Laviolette to be Named Head Coach of Rangers

Laviolette is finally back on the market after being let go by Washington this spring, and as he looks to return to the NHL next season behind the bench, New York is closing in on making him their next head coach.

It was reported that New York really wanted Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan, but his contractual obligations to Pittsburgh prevented that from happening. Laviolette was likely next on New York's list of candidates, and so he's likely their guy.

Laviolette was fired after failing to make the postseason with Washington for the first time during his tenure there, which came as a surprise to many fans. The veteran head coach has undeniable skill behind the bench and will look to elevate the game of stars such as Artemi Panarin in New York.
