The Colorado Avalanche are forced to see one of their RFAs leave, as Sampo Ranta has decided to leave the NHL.

The 22-year-old is joining MoDo, a team in the Swedish Hockey League.

He Looks Forward to Playing in the SHL

"I chose MoDo because it is a club with ambitions and a drive to achieve success. It is also a club with a lot of tradition and history. It felt like it suited me well, and I have heard very good things about MoDo and Örnsköldsvik from my Swedish friends."

He added, "My big goal is to help MoDo win many games and achieve success in the SHL. As a player, I am driven to take steps forward. The SHL is a very good league with great competition, and I think it will be a lot of fun."

Ranta was chosen in the third round (78th overall) of the 2018 NHL Draft by Colorado. After three great seasons at the University of Minnesota, Ranta signed his initial contract in 2021 and joined the Colorado Eagles. That same year, he also participated in two playoff games.

Born in Naantali, Finland, Ranta managed to feature in 16 regular season games for the Avalanche during the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons, yet he failed to register any points. With the Eagles, he scored 43 points, including 22 goals.

The Avs still hold his NHL rights until he becomes a UFA in a couple of years.

We wish him the best of luck in Sweden!
