Gilles Courteau on Sunday announced his resignation as Commissioner of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

It is believed that Courteau's decision stems from ongoing criticisms over QMJHL leadership, which include - but are not limited to - hazing and sexual misconduct.

"Today, I contacted Mr. Richard Letourneau, president of the consell of administration of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, to announce my resignation, effective immediately. I am no longer the commissioner of the LHJMQ," Courteau said in his official statement.

Courteau also cited recent events, which have taken a toll on himself and his family, which are believed to be connected to the aforementioned problems facing the league. Assistant commissioner Martin Lavallée will assume the position until a permanent fixture is appointed.

The now-former Commissioner was accused of perjuring himself during a Parliamentary hearing concerning hazing violations within the QMJHL. Premier François Legault questioned his confidence in Courteau and implied a concern because of «contradictory statements.»
