One of the most sought after players during this year's upcoming NHL trade deadline is the San Jose Sharks' Timo Meier. With 31 goals at the time this article was written, Meier is on pace for a career year in goals at the age of 24. Meier will be a restricted free agent at the end of this year and has no trade protection in his current contract. However, he's reportedly told one Canadian team that if he's traded there, he won't be staying.

"A league source told The Athletic that the Jets are interested in trading for Sharks star Timo Meier but Meier's camp has indicated that, if acquired, he would not be interested in signing an extension in Winnipeg," said The Athletic's Murat Ates.

According to Ates, this has dramatically reduced the Jets' interest in Meier, which should come as no surprise.

"The Jets are not after a rental for the price Meier is likely to fetch — not even a two-year rental, which Meier could be if the Jets tendered his $10 million qualifying offer this summer. The Jets won't give up top prospects or draft capital unless the player(s) they acquire are here for the long haul," explained Ates.

Why Meier isn't interested in signing in Winnipeg isn't exactly clear, but the guy is in a position to sculpt his own future given his emergence as a major talent, and he seems intent on doing that. Tough luck for the Jets, who may have to end up moving fellow RFA Pierre-Luc Dubois over the summer if he decides he's not interested in signing in Winnipeg long-term as well. Should that happen, the team will have to be creative in order to replace the talent Dubois brings to the team.
